Pseudobulbar paralysis (supranuclear bulbar paralysis) is a syndrome characterized by paralysis of the muscles innervated by V, VII, IX, X, XII by the cranial nerves, as a result of bilateral damage to the cortical-nuclear pathways to the nuclei of these nerves.

Signs and symptoms of progressive bulbar palsy include difficulty swallowing, weak jaw and facial muscles, progressive loss of speech, and weakening of the tongue. Bulbar palsy refers to a range of different signs and symptoms linked to impairment of function of the cranial nerves IX, X, XI, XII, which occurs due to a lower motor neuron lesion in the medulla oblongata or from lesions of the lower cranial nerves outside the brainstem. Bulbar syndrome is one of the dangerous manifestations of myasthenia. Myasthenia gravis (myasthenia gravis) is a disease, the leading clinical manifestation of which is abnormal muscle fatigue, decreasing until complete recovery after taking anticholinesterase drugs. Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP) is a medical condition. It belongs to a group of disorders known as motor neuron diseases. PBP is a disease that attacks the nerves supplying the bulbar muscles.

Bulbar palsy is the result of diseases affecting the lower cranial nerves (VII-XII). A speech deficit occurs due to paralysis or weakness of the muscles of articulation which are supplied by these cranial nerves. The causes of this are broadly divided into: Diagnosis Differential diagnosis.

Any condition which disrupts or damages the cranial nerve nuclei or corticobulbar tracts can cause bulbar or pseudobulbar palsy (e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis, infections, brain stem tumors). Both bulbar and pseudobulbar palsy are seen mainly in men over 75 years old and present with dysarthria and dysphagia.

Bulbar poliomyelitis is associated with paralysis of muscle groups innervated by cranial nerves. Five percent to 35% of persons with paralytic poliomyelitis experience bulbar involvement.

Bulbar syndrome

Recently, childhood forms of progressive bulbar palsy have been genetically caused by Brown–Vialetto–Van Laere (BVVL) and Fazio–Londe syndromes. BVVL is an autosomal recessive disorder, which means that both parents may be carriers for the disease without expressing the condition themselves, and can pass on the expressive form of the disease to their child.

A person having a PBA crying spell may cry when they don’t feel sad or when they only feel a little bit sad. In contrast, pseudobulbar palsy is a clinical syndrome similar to bulbar palsy but in which the damage is located in upper motor neurons of the corticobulbar tracts in the mid-pons (i.e., in the cranial nerves IX-XII), that is the nerve cells coming down from the cerebral cortex innervating the motor nuclei in the medulla. Any condition which disrupts or damages the cranial nerve nuclei or corticobulbar tracts can cause bulbar or pseudobulbar palsy (e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis, infections, brain stem tumors).

Progressive bulbar palsy is a medical condition. It belongs to a group of disorders known as motor neuron diseases. PBP is a disease that attacks the nerves supplying the bulbar muscles. These disorders are characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons in the cerebral cortex, spinal cord, brain stem, and pyramidal tracts. This specifically involves the glossopharyngeal nerve, vagus nerve, and hypoglossal nerve. This disorder should not be confused with pseudobulbar palsy or
